Palmetto State Quartet - Jun 06

As sad as I am to see Aaron leave I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be traveling and singing with my old buddy Burman Porter again. Burman and I traveled together with The Dove Brothers Quartet for nearly five years before circumstances took us in different directions. Over the last three and a half years Burman and I have never failed to keep in contact. Any time Palmetto State had a singing engagement within a reasonable distance of his home town Burman would come out to see us, then when he and his family would vacation in the Smoky Mountains Jennifer and I would do our best to dine with them as oft as possible. Burman moved his family to Knoxville, Tennessee last year and started singing with the Blackwood Gospel Quartet. When I had the privilege of helping him move into his new house, only 35 minutes from my home in Sevier County, I was excited by the prospects of family cookouts and what not. Then we got busy with our respective quartets and the next time we saw each other our groups were singing together in Terrell, TX, then a month or so later in Sioux Falls, SD. Needless to say we’ve seen more of each other on the road than we have at home.
There have been many stories told about Burman ranging from the hilarious to the absurd and I’m here to tell you that they are all absolutely true. From allowing someone to shoot him once he had donned a bullet proof vest to having his lights knocked out by a dead turkey Burman’s life has been nothing if not exciting. If our previous travels together are any indication of the future I’m sure there will be plenty to share with you over the coming years. Burman is truly a character right out of the funny pages. He laughs from the moment he wakes up until he finally passes out from exhaustion at the end of the day. One thing is for sure, if life on the road has ever become monotonous or boring it is now clear that those days are over.
Burman Porter is back on the scene, and once again he is singing his way into the hearts of Southern Gospel Quartet Fans across the country. His rich bass tones perfectly compliment the full sound of the trio and give us a firm foundation on which to build some beautiful close harmonies. All of the guys are excited about the future of Palmetto State Quartet with Burman Porter singing bass. We pray that you will welcome him to our family with open hearts, minds, and arms.

Kings Heralds -Jun 06

This year will be the first time that The Kings Heralds have attended the NQC since 1967. In addition to having a booth, we will be performing on Monday, September 11 at the Artist spotlight showcase in the South Wing. The singing starts at 1:00 pm so come early and get a good seat.
Many have been asking how the new recording is coming. We are happy to report that the material has been selected and the tracks have been cut. I bet we listened to over 100 GREAT songs, so narrowing them down to just 12 was a real challenge. Some of the great songwriters who contributed to this recording are Marty Funderburk, Jerry Kelso, Niles Borop, Rebecca Peck, Barbara Huffman, Gary Casto as well as our producer extrodinaire, Wayne Haun.We are very anxious to see what Wayne does with the orchestration. Wayne will be going to Prague to do the orchestration..we are very excited!!
I guess the number one question we have been asked is when is the move happening. Right now, it looks as if the trucks will roll the last day or two of July. The process of packing and sorting what goes and what stays has begun. Please keep us in your prayers while there is much to sort through business wise as well.
Please be sure to drop by our booth at NQC and say hi. We'd love to meet each on of you.
Until next month...we'll catch you down the road somewhere.

The Ride of Your Life

Life feels like a rollercoaster to me sometimes. We recently went through some tough things in our family – we were hit hard by tornadoes in West Tennessee, losing two family members along with all the devastation of property. Seven family members lost their homes and my mom and dad’s house was damaged when a huge tree fell on it, only feet from where they were hiding. Tim had another lung test and was put on oxygen at night. Rachel informed us she will be moving to Louisville, Kentucky when she gets married.
All of this is now being followed up by many good things! My Mom and Dad have had their house repaired. Tim’s lung capacity has improved. We have just released a new single – “It’s a Sure Thing” – and not only that, but we got the opportunity to do a concept video for that single in downtown Nashville thanks to our Pastor, Johnny Minick! How cool is that?! Rachel getting engaged – talk about a rollercoaster of emotions!
No matter how crazy things get, I can always call out to God and He’s right there. I can always pick up my Bible and find the answers I need to any situation. I can always trust in the salvation that Christ provided on the cross. I can always trust in the power of the Holy Ghost to face anything that comes my way. It’s a Sure Thing you can depend on the Lord! What Are You Waiting For!
P.S. I DID ride some other rides – Thunder Mountain, Monster Plantation, Dahlonega Mine Train, and the old model T’s. Now if you don’t think that riding in a kiddie Model T was daring, let me inform you that I let Tim drive…
till next time…

Daryl Williams Trio - Jun 06

I tried being "Monster Mommy" once but the kids just laughed and told me I wasn't scary enough. It is definitely daddy's game. And I can appreciate that because my dad made up games that my mom was not capable of imitating. As wonderful as mom is, my dad provided a presence in the household that she could not. I had no use for Superman or Batman because Will Blythe was my superhero.
My dad came home from working all day exhausted and hungry but ready to play. When I heard the car door slam, I ran to my usual hiding spot (behind the couch). I have no idea why I hid in the same spot everyday but my dad would search the house as if he couldn't hear my laughter or see my legs sticking out in plain sight. I truly believed he could jump over tall buildings in a single bound or catch a speeding bullet in his teeth. I wasn't so sure about the whole flying thing. But I had my suspicions that he could. The child in me still believes he's super-human. The adult in me knows he's not but I still respect and revere him with the same admiration that I did as an unrealistic 5 year old.
I know that not everyone was afforded the privilege of a good dad. But fatherhood is vital in a child's life. Just ask the therapist who counsels those who struggled without a father. I was recently appalled at the comment of a well-known female activist. She stated that the role of a father was diminished to simply impregnating a female. She said that "a woman, can then, handle the rest."
I know women are quite capable and there are dead-beat dads out there which require a mom to raise kids alone, but that kind of attitude destroys the respect and admonition of fatherhood. This kind of warped mindset hinders our children and our society. The role of fatherhood has not diminished but the respect for the position has.
I am with my 3 kids nearly 24/7, just as my mom was, making sure they are clothed, clean and fed. However, Daryl's role as spiritual leader, protector, and provider is equally vital. I'm not even sure if Daryl realizes that. Maybe this article will affirm it. He went to California for a few days last month for a funeral. But you would've thought the funeral was here. The kids moped around as if he were shipped off to Iraq. They missed their dad, his humor, and especially his cooking. The first meal after he left, my 12 year old asked why I purchased a rubber chicken instead of a real one. She inherited Daryl's sarcasm. I doused the chicken in BBQ sauce to disguise the fact that I overcooked it but my 8 year old still said it was like chewing chicken-flavored gum.
Back to my point.....A dad's role in a child's life is irreplaceable. Thank goodness Christ can and will fill that void if you don't have an earthly father in your life! My mom is living proof of that. But If you are blessed with a good dad, don't let this month go by without expressing your appreciation. Remind him of his importance in your life. Being a good dad doesn't require perfection, but it does require participation.
Thanks DAD and thanks DARYL for rising to the challenge and responsibility of fatherhood.
Happy Father's Day,
Karen

“Prodigal Son”

Eventually, the tape didn’t work any more. I haven't heard it in years, but when we were searching for songs for our last CD I remembered my favorite song from that tape- It was "Prodigal Son"
It is a fun song to sing, but my favorite part is the message. What a great picture of our Heavenly Father's love for us! The song has one line in particular that always grabs my heart- it is where the father says "this is my darling child!"
God feels that way about us! We are precious to Him. His love for us is greater than we can imagine! And He waits with open arms to give a welcome with blessing and forgiveness to those who make the journey back home to Him!
Lyrics:
Well, I believe, yes, I believe that I will go back home
Oh, I believe, yes, I believe that I will go back home
Well, I believe, yes, i believe that I will go back home
And be a servant of the Lord
The prodigal son was a wayward child
His heart was not to obey
But when He lost all he had a sinnin'
Well, he knew he had gone astray
When his father saw him comin'
He met him with a smile
He threw his arms around him
He said, "This is my darlin' child"
The Human Condition

Embrace is very excited about this upcoming weekend. We are participating in our third Hearts and Harmony concert with Phil Cross and Poet Voices. The event will be a combined effort by several local churches in the Reform, Alabama area. The special people of Reform have grown to be dear friends of Embrace and have actively supported our ministry for several years now. What a wonderful opportunity to minister the Hope that is Jesus Christ to the community there! We are all looking forward to what the Lord will do through His people.
I have to admit all the activity this spring has me and many of the people who are dearest to me feeling a little overwhelmed. The baseball team, the softball team, the ballet school, vacation Bible school, my children and certainly not least, my husband all want my time, effort and attention. I'm trying hard to be a "Mary" in a "Martha" kind of world (Luke 10:38-42). Honestly, I have been asking the Lord to give me wisdom in this area because I am a natural born "Martha". I like order and feeling well prepared for whatever comes down the pike. Details are my specialty and nothing is too small to fuss over-not good.
Like many of my kind-the "Marthas" of the world-I used to try to rationalize my worry and nit-picking. I would tell the Lord and myself that I just wanted things done right. I wanted to honor Him with my best efforts, but deep inside I knew that I was expending a great deal of time and energy on good things at the high cost of missing the Best Thing.. Like Martha in the Bible, Jesus was in the house but I was missing spending precious time with Him and instead trying to do things for Him.
Just a few weeks ago the Lord brought a poem to my attention that challenged me once again to stay true to the purpose that He ordains in my life and not to be drawn away by worldly concerns that of have no merit. Let me share it with you.
The Human Condition
We are prisoners of time,
Slaves to circumstance,
And beggars for eternity.
We have made small our souls
To match our situations,
That in greed for trash,
We have trampled greatness.
And laughing at their prey,
Time tightens the chains
That bind us,
Circumstance cracks the whip
That marks us;
Only eternity grieves
That we are fools.
--Jan L. King, Sr.
Our prayer must be that our Good Shepherd will give us the wisdom to lie down in those green pastures He takes us to and to drink from the quiet waters He shows us.
"He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust," (Psalm 103:14) Praise His holy name!

Sharron Kay King - Jun 06

This month I thought I'd take the opportunity to fill you all in on what's been going on in my little world the last few months.
Family News: I have spent the last several weeks relocating back to my hometown of Richmond, IN. I was born and raised here. Most of my family live here and now that I have grandchildren; well, enough said! That explains it all!! I love being close to my family. We only have them for a short time and I felt I was missing out on so much. Being on the road more than half of the year I rarely had time to see them for very long at one time. Now I live within a few blocks of my grand babies and you betcha, I see them nearly every day!
Radio News: DJ's thank you so much for playing and charting, "Chin Up, Journey On". I am so happy to know that you and your listeners are enjoying this toe tapping tune!
On the music side of life: God has opened the door for me to record again. Praise His holy name!!!!
Recently I was in Nashville laying down the tracks for my upcoming CD. It sounds wonderful. I have penned three songs for this project. I feel they are songs of encouragement and hope. I love songs that uplift and inspire people to stay on the journey. Three other songs I have recorded are penned from the ever talented Daryl Mosley. We all remember his song from The Booth Brothers last year, "The Blind Man Saw It All". I'm feel very fortunate that Daryl has allowed me to record his songs.
My good pal, Les Butler is producing this project along with engineer, Terry Thompson at Upfront Studios in Nashville. I can't wait to hear the completed project. I am currently praying for direction on a title.
A big thank you to friends and family who have made contributions toward this project. Your donations toward this ministry is always appreciated and put to use for the Kingdom! If you feel that you would like to make a donation toward the completion of this project please see address listed below.
Many other things have been moving forward for Songs of Sharron Ministries. Management & booking information has changed. A new website is in the works. Isn't it exciting to set and watch God move? I love knowing that if we believe we can receive! Be watching for updates right here on SoGospelNews.com
I have to admit some of the changes I've seen take place this year have literally scared me to death. But I have learned throughout my 19 years of serving God, that He has never let me down. Sometimes God will allow certain things in our life to be torn down just to enable Him to rebuild it. I love the way God likes to show off! He is ever faithful and always on time…. I love walking with Him! Trusting Him is always a good thing!
Please continue to pray for this ministry along with others who are traveling the highways and byways doing our part to share this "good news" with folks all over the world. If we will all bind together in one mind and one accord we will begin to see mighty things begin to happen.. We are all called to serve. Let's serve one another so that we may prove to be pleasing in God's sight.
Until next month, "Chin Up, Journey On"!!!!! ( I heard someone say that one time) haha

June Reflections

Movies and television these days portray "Dad" as a bumbling idiot…a lovable buffoon who is unnecessary, but tolerated. His opinion, his permission, and his blessing is no longer sought or welcome. His wife and children have been "liberated" from his influence. He's a big teddy bear, a push-over, a wimp, and registers pretty much a zero on the "respect-o-meter". At work he's the absentee, the goof-off, the screw-up. He struggles to hold on to his minimum wage job while his wife brings home the bacon, solves everyone's problems, and has the respect and admiration of her peers. She holds him up to ridicule to their children and points to him as the perfect example of how not to be. I know it's just television…..isn't it?
My dad wasn't like Andy, Opie's pa. He wasn't like Beaver's dad, Ward, or Hoss Cartwright's paw. He was My Dad. Perfect? No. He didn't always know the right thing to say or how to say it. His advice was not always timely or appreciated. He sometimes got impatient and angry. His attempts to fix things were not always successful. He couldn't do the new math or impress anyone with his mental gymnastics or athletic prowess.
But what Dad could do was what he did. He could work two jobs most of the time just to make ends meet. He could spend months on an unfamiliar job in a strange northern town when there was no work at home. He could teach a Sunday School class and take us to church twice on Sunday, Tuesday night "young people's meeting" and Thursday night prayer meeting. He could play board games and pump up bicycle tires. He could buy us trumpets, trombones and clarinets and pay for piano lessons out of his meager salary. He could drive three hours to take us to gospel concerts that he couldn't afford and allow us to go in and listen to the Statesmen while he and mom waited outside in the car. He could send us to youth camp and pay for trips to enter Teen Talent competitions and brag on us to his clueless buddies at work. He could fly us home from Nashville just for Thanksgiving Day. He could teach. He could warn. He could praise. But who was praising him?
If Kermit thought it wasn't easy being green, he should have been a dad. It is not a job for the faint of heart; and although the bookstores are filled with how-to books on parenting, it is a lonely and little understood position. I caught a glimpse of it many years ago when my first marriage ended. Suddenly, I was plunged headfirst into the pool of responsibility. I was…there is no polite way to say this…deserted with two children under the age of four. The burden of their care and safety, food, shelter, clothing, physical and emotional wellbeing was all on my shoulders. I will never forget standing in shock amidst the empty boxes that I was about to pack my life away in. I had no money, no plan, no clue. And although my dad could have said, "I told you so", he didn't. He gave me a hug and moved me and two kids back into his house. He added three rooms and a basement to his home to make room for us. My dad didn't have to welcome me in. He could have said, "You've made your choices. Now live with them." But instead, he made a place for me.
I had always heard the scripture that says, "In my father's house are many mansions…", but it really didn't register until then. Various Bible translations have raised the question of whether it literally means "mansions" or whether it simply means "rooms". (Isn't it just like us kids to argue over who gets the front seat?) The point is, regardless of whether it's mansions or rooms, our Heavenly Father has prepared a place for us, and we don't deserve it. That is awesome to me. We will all face another "moving day", and God has spared no expense to see to it that His children are safe at home with Him.
When my dad retired, he was given a handshake and a watch that never kept time. He never had a wall full of framed certificates of achievement. There was no bowling or golf trophy on dad's mantle. In fact, he didn't even have a mantle. He had an old upright piano covered with a brown velveteen scarf that held five faded eight-by-tens - pictures of his children…five children that grew up to be good citizens, good sports and good Christians. These were Dad's "trophies".
This is to all of you who swing a hammer or dig a ditch, who wear starched white collars or blue, who wear uniforms and walk a beat in Iowa or Iraq, who stand behind pulpits or travel on buses to sing. There are still dads out there who exemplify God's grace. We still need you.
Thanks to all our Godly dads this Father's Day.

Crabb Family - Jun 06

Those of you who have been to CrabbFest before will notice that we have given the event a bit of a "facelift" this year. For the past few years we have had several calls in our office prior to CrabbFest asking us to add a night where we just visit with our friends. They love all of the other artists that are on the program, and they definitely buy tickets to see those artists, but the people who attend are very dear friends of ours that we only get to visit with a few times a year. Instead of adding a night, we decided to make Wednesday night "Crabb Family Night." Of course, since Mike Bowling is part of the Crabb Family, he will be there with his new group. We have also invited our friends Crossway to join us for this special evening since they have also come to know many of our concert attendees.
On Thursday night, we have invited Salvador to participate on the program. Last year, the addition of Avalon to the program was a huge success, so we have decided to make it a tradition of the event to offer a few versatile styles of Christian music. Other newcomers to this year's CrabbFest include the Booth Brothers and the Whisnants. CrabbFest favorites returning this year include Aaron Wilburn, the McRaes, Brian Free & Assurance, the Isaacs, Lynda Randle, Russ Taff, Paid in Full….and the list goes on.
In the past we have had morning worship services and afternoon concerts, which turn in to worship services! This year we've decided to combine the two. We will have one daily service at 1 pm. The services will include preaching, singing, and a few surprises! You never know what to expect during one of these services.
For the first time ever, GMA Academy is coming to CrabbFest. GMA will officially host the talent contest and a series of seminars. At the seminars you'll learn the answers to any questions you may have about on songwriting, building a career in the music industry, stage performance, publishing, and copyrighting, and much more! There will be Talent Contest categories for solo, group, and songwriter. Soloists and groups will compete in a live performance, while songwriters will bring their song on CD or cassette. Special packages are available to include seminar and competition, as a package, or as separate events. For complete details log onto http://www.thecrabbfamily.com, or call (615) 826-7218.
VIP Passes and tickets are still available! We want to see you at CrabbFest!
