Devin, you've already had a great run in Southern Gospel music even though you're still young. However, many people may not know your history. Share with us how you got your start in Gospel music.
I have been singing since I was five years old. At about the age of 11, I did my first solo tape and began traveling locally around southern Georgia doing solo concerts. I continued to do solo recordings every year. At the age of 17, two days after graduating high school, I joined the Dixie Melody Boys to be their lead singer - a life long dream come true, I was singing "Full Time"!!!
Most people saw your shift from the Dixie Melody Boys to Karen Peck & New River as quite a dramatic move. What caused the move?
I could see where that was a surprise to most people. I treasured my time with the Dixie Melody Boys. Ed O'neal is a legend, and I learned so much during my five years there. I felt the time was right and saw it as a great move. It was definitely a great transition and growing time for my family and me.
Fans not only saw that as a shocker - but your move to Signature Sound also seemed to be in a totally different vein as well. What's the feedback been like?
The feedback we have received has been nothing but positive. Gospel music fans are the best in the world, but the southern gospel Ernie Haase & Signature Sound fans are just Incredible! We are absolutely stoked about the opportunity to be a part of the EHSS team! All the fans have been so gracious to me, many whom I have met in my previous years in gospel music.
What's it like traveling with Southern Gospel's biggest quartet?
This is UNREAL!! What a lot of people don't know is Ernie, Doug, and I have been friends for years. When we would work the same concerts, we would go run and workout together. I would ride their bus often times to the different venues. So it is great getting to travel with my buddies. But on the professional side, these guys never settle for anything less than giving it there all, and I love that, because that is my personality as well! I love striving for what some refer to as the impossible and going for the next level!
Give us a day in the life of Devin McGlamery.
My day with Signature Sound differs from some of the other guys, but we all have some common denominators. I wake to a protein bar and coffee. Make my way to a dressing room at the venue where I try to wake up. In the process of waking up, I am putting on workout clothes and running shoes. Then within a few minutes, like clock work, Doug is banging on the door ready to head to a gym or out the door for our everyday run with Ernie and Wayne! After our workout, it's a light lunch, then off to soundcheck/rehearsal where we meet the rest of the gang. We do that for an hour or so, have supper, then some down time before the show. And somewhere in the midst of that is a shower, I promise!!! We pour our hearts out for about 2 1/2 hours, crawl on the bus, head to the next venue and do it all over again! And we love it!!!!
What are some of your biggest musical influences?
Of course, the great Cathedral Quartet. I have been watching those guys since I was a kid. But in other genres, I would have to say my love for music spans far beyond Southern Gospel. I love great music. Whether that is found in Southern Gospel, Contemporary, Rock, Pop, Country or Jazz, I just love great music! A friend told me long ago, "take three or four of your favorite singers, mix them up with yourself and create your own person, if nobody else likes it, at least you will!!" So I guess my people would consist of Glen and George, mixed with a little Michael Bolton and Michael Buble' and some Rod Stewart on the side...for the hair of course!!
How do you try and incorporate those influences into a Southern Gospel style?
Well the Rod Stewart thing speaks for itself!! But the swagger of Buble', the soul and texture of Bolton, and the phrasing and heart of Glen and George! I learned a long time ago that I don't like everything I see or hear, so that tells me, I may not be what everyone likes as well, and that is totally ok!! But what I want said of me, especially of my singing, is that I tried to be nobody else but me. Of course there will be musical influences along the way, there are no original ideas. I wanna take those influence and mold the person and the singer that God created me to be!
Tell us about your family.
I have to start off and say that I have to be one of the most blessed men in all the world! I have an awesome wife, Karen, who totally gets and understands what I do. And not only that, she loves it like I do! Two beautiful children: my little girl Karlyn who is four years old and my little man Preston who is 17 months! We have a great home life. We try to spend every minute we can together. And anytime we are at a concert venue for more than two days, you will find them there with me!
Any additional information you'd like to share?
I am so thankful and blessed to get to do, what it is that I do for a living. When I stop and think about it, I am overwhelmed at the goodness of God on my life! I am living proof of Psalm 37:4. He will give you the desires of your heart!
