Providence Quartet - Under Grace

Producer:  Eddie Swann
Label:  Gideon Records
Websitewww.providencequartet.com

With a sound very reminiscent to the Kingsmen from the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Providence Quartet has a very solid sound.  Though they remind of the Kingsmen’s glory years, they have a slightly softer sound and those who may not appreciate that era, may find a lot to like about these guys.  It’s very obvious these guys know what they’re doing as they do it well.

The title song, “UNDER GRACE” is a soulful tune penned by Rebecca Peck the song does a good job setting the stage for another Peck penned song, “I MET THE LORD ON DAMASCUS ROAD”, which has that good ol’ Kingsmen sound and showcases the group very well before moving on to “RESURRECTION MORNING”, which the Kingsmen actually recorded on their “Good News” recording during their Carolina Boys Quartet days.

I have always found that patriotic songs in Southern Gospel tend to be somewhat hokey.  But I really like the message found in “AMERICA, IT’S TIME TO PRAY” and find this somewhat unassuming song to be one of the best on this recording.

The uptempo, “GONNA KEEP MOVING” is yet another Rebecca Peck tune and is a fun little ditty you’ll find yourself listening to over and over again before things slow down for the song entitled, “WHERE ANGELS ROAM”, penned by Ila Knight.

Written by Squire Parsons and previously recorded by the Crossmen Quartet, the group does a good job with their own rendition of “HEAVEN WILL BE MINE SOMEDAY” before turning in excellent performances on a couple of old Kingsmen standards, “I OWE IT ALL TO HIM” (one of my all time favorite Kingsmen tunes) and “SHAKE HANDS WITH A POOR BOY”.

The recording ends splendidly with the power ballad, “HE SEES THE LAMB”, which is one of their strongest vocal performances on the recording.

The overall production quality of this recording is excellent.  Vocally, they’re very good and the song choice is great as well.  This recording has made me a fan of the Providence Quartet.  Though traditional in nature, I find them exciting as they bring back the sound of one of my favorite versions of the Kingsmen (I am a HUGE Kingsmen fan).  Though I don’t feel they purposely try to sound that way, the vocal structure and sound of the group does lend itself to that feel, and I think it’s great.  My one question is this…where have these guys been?

Personal Favs:   I MET THE LORD ON DAMASCUS ROAD; AMERICA, IT’S TIME TO PRAY; I OWE IT ALL TO HIM; SHAKE HANDS WITH A POOR BOY; HE SEES THE LAMB

To say I am honored to be a part of this project would be an understatement. It's always a thrill to see a group come on the scene with this kind of talent. Good things are on the horizon for these guys, and I can't wait to see what God has in store for them. P.S. Thanks for the kind words, James! :o)

Congratulations guys - this is a solid freshman project for this group! Good to see Rob singing with a solid group of guys. He does some great lead singing on this project - maybe we can sing together sometime. Good CD and a good selection of songs. My favorite is "Heaven Will Be Mine Someday", although I am a little partial to "Resurrection Morning." By the way, great songs by Rebecca Peck - especially like Damascus Road. God bless!

The first time I came across the web site of Providence Quartet I also wondered where these guys had been. In March they sang at my church (Fellowship Freewill Baptist) and they were even better in person. Not only do they sing to perfection, but their testimony is incredible. These guys really are going places and I will be honored to say I knew them when. May God continue to pour out His Blessings on Providence.

You guys are really great. Not only does the message of the Gospel come through your music, but it also radiates on your faces.

God Bless you and your sound technician,

My wife and I are devote Catholics and have been all our lives. I have been playing guitar in church for over 20 years. I have always loved Southen Gospel Music and play it when ever I can. My wife never really listened to it because it didn't come from the Catholic Heritage. This past Oct my wife and I drove from FL to Dollywood and found ourselves in the middle of the Southern Gospel month. We heard several groups but couldn't believe the beautiful sound of music coming from the Provident Quartet. We stayed for two shows and she even had her picture taken with them (although it didn't turn out). We bought their CD's and for Christmas she bought me two more. As she says listening to the Provident Quartet is another form of praying. We play their music over and over. Keep your ministry going. You touch a lot of people.
