Has the rivalry begun?

I wasn't even aware that anything was going on until I got to NQC and heard the buzz. I didn't think much of it, the fact that Ernie Haase had decided to record "Get Away Jordan".
Then I talked with McCray Dove and he informed me that he had asked permission from Hovie Lister, as a courtesy of course, to record the Statesmen signature song "Get Away Jordan". "Now", McCray says, "the gauntlet has been thrown down." With a smile on his face he says, "And Ernie didn't even ask.", indicating that Ernie Haase and Signature Sound had recorded "Get Away Jordan", which McCary considers to have become the Dove Brothers signature song. McCray adds, "We've tried to drop the song, but the fans just won't let us." So, Saturday night, just a little after 10PM, after singing one song off their new CD, McCray throws down his own gauntlet. McCray tells the 15,000 in attendance that the hottest quartet in Southern Gospel Music could not be at the NQC this week because they were in Africa singing, and he asks them if they know who it is. Of course the crowd yells back "Signature Sound". Then McCray tells them that Signature Sound is singing "Get Away Jordan" over in Africa, and asks them how they would like to hear the Dove Brothers sing a Signature Sound song at NQC. Of course, the crowd, raved. However, McCray, not satisfied with just a little raving, said "Well if you don't want us to sing it, we won't do it", and of course the crowd cheered him on. At this point Tim Lovelace prances on stage and announces that the Dove Brothers could not just "sing" a Signature Sound song, but they had to "look" the part. So, Tim proceeded to around to each singer and mess up their hair trying to make them have the Signature Sound hair style. The Tim pulled out a pair of scissors from his coat and proceeded to cut each singers tie very short. Now, the Dove Brothers were ready to sing a Signature Sound song.

Then the introduction to the Signature Sound hit "Stand By Me" started and the crowd went wild. The whole place was on their feet. One thing that the Dove Brothers do NOT have is dance moves, but that didn't stop them from trying. David Hester did a pretty good straight up job of singing the Bass feature, but the rest of the guys were pretty much struggling to find some sort of dance move even close to Signature Sounds moves. I was frankly afraid that McCray might hurt himself with some of those moves. I hope he knows a good chiropractor. I can only assume that the rest of the crowd was enjoying the song, because I was laughing so hard that my eyes were watering.

The Dove Brothers went straight into their version of "Get Away Jordan" and the crowd cheered even louder. Going from that right into "Didn't It Rain", the crowd never let up cheering and clapping the whole time. I was sitting in front of the timer and noticed that for fifteen consecutive minutes the crowd was on it's feet clapping and cheering for the Dove Brothers, and you could see in McCray's eyes that he was saying to Ernie Haase........ "Take that!!!!".

I can remember many years back when there was a rivalry between the Blackwoods and the Statesmen and between the Oak Ridge Boys and the Kingsmen. It was lots of good old fashioned rivalry that brought some real competition that made each group better. There was not mean spiritedness, but there was some pranks that got carried out. That rivalry brought out the best of all the groups and in the long run brought out the best of Southern Gospel Music.

So, I'm waiting to see if this was just a fluke, or has the rivalry between the Dove Brothers and Signature Sound begun?

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE RIVALRY BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS, BUT ONE THING I DO KNOW, IS THAT THAT PERFORMANCE OF THE DOVE BROTHERS WAS ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!!! WITH OF COURSE THE HELP OF TIM!! I WAS LAUGHING SO HARD THAT MY STOMACH WAS HURTING!!

I HAVE A NEW APPRECIATION OF THE DOVE BROTHERS AFTER WATCHING THEM OVER THE PAST WEEK AT THE NQC, AND I TOO, WAS GETTING A BIT CONCERNED FOR MCRAY'S WELFARE, AS THE TIME WENT ON. BUT AGAIN IT JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW MUCH HEART THESE GUYS HAVE!!!

BRAVO TO THE DOVE BROTHERS!!

THANKS FOR MAKING SUCH A SPECIAL MEMORY OF THE NQC, AND I SURE HOPE THAT THAT SEGMENT WILL BE PUT ON THE DVD OF 2006!!! AS THIS DEFINATELY IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE AGAIN!!!

Keep in mind that Hovie Lister has passed away since the Dove Brothers did their rendition. So it is impossible that Ernie Haase could have asked him. Since all the other Statesmen at the time have also passed away, there was nobody that he could ask.

I've seen the Dove Brothers a few times... what I would give to have been at NQC this year and see them make absolute fools of themselves! Just the thought of them trying to imitate SSQ's moves is killing! And the Dove Brothers thinking that "Get Away Jordan" is their "signature" song is entirely foolish. Why should McCray Dove be so worried if the fans love their version so much... might he be afraid that Signature Sound will out do them? And isn't it a little low class to poke fun at a group when they're not even there? There are limits to everything, you know.

Deon Unthank's avatar fan, what an unkind jab at the Dove Brothers. The fact is that "Get Away Jordan" has become the Dove Brothers signature song, there is nothing foolish about that. They can't go anywhere without it being requested. What is low class is the low blow jab that you took and the fact that you cannot see that this was all done light heartedly.

Deon, what was lighthearted about it? When the Dove Brothers talent level comes even close to Signature Sound, then let the rivalry begin. To compare this rivalry to the Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers is pure wishful thinking on your part. Even though I'm not crazy about either group's choreograhy (sp.), the talent level of Signature Sound is greater part by part.

Deon Unthank's avatar Well, tiger, it's apparent that you weren't there and have absolutely no idea what this blog was about. You are making me think that Southern Gospel Music is filled with mean spirited people like you leave the impression you are.
The talent level of both groups is extremely high, and your preference doesn't make the talent level of either group any less. I am a fan of both groups and am able to recognize that their styles are completely different, but that doesn't take away from the talent level.
I guess I am just amazed at how a lighthearted blog, purely written for the fun of the evening, can be taken so viciously. No, I'm amazed that Christians who are supposed to be different than the world and live in love towards one another are just so plain mean.

I thought the Dove's segment on Saturday night was the highlight of the week! I still wonder why Sig Sound would record Get Away Jordan so soon after this song became a "trademark request" every where the Dove appear. Look at their performance either on their on DVD, or on one of the Live at NQC and you will see they were doing some "footwork moves" before EHSSQ existed.

I must not have been alone in my thoughts since a whole area full of people were right there with me laughed, applauding and cheering. It was all in fun, and was a great moment in NQC history, in my opinion.

I say SO WHAT! LOL, how silly -- I really can't think one would be upset because another is singing a song that, in the first place, didn't write.....You sing to uplift people.....keep your eyes on the prize....(heaven) Try to remember why you are singing.....and who you are singing about........Enjoy and praise His name. There are other things in this world to be upset about...for one thing...the wars....the hunger.....shall I go on??
I love EHSSQ as much as I love the Dove Brothers. In fact, it woud be cool to see them on the same stage singing it together! LOL
